Moe’s Bistro in Lebanon

Moe's Bistro, Lebanon, Mediterranean cuisine,

A Date-Night Destination

Have you ever walked into a restaurant as a stranger and walked out as a friend? This is exactly what happened to me recently at Moe’s Bistro in Lebanon. I am in love.

Moe's Bistro, Lebanon, Grilled Vegetable TowerFrom the outside, Moe’s Bistro looks like just another storefront restaurant, sporting a simple black sign. Step inside and you will be pleasantly surprised! The welcoming atmosphere is colorful and adorned with beautiful details: no two tables and chairs are alike and different plates are used throughout. Moe’s is  unique, oozing both charm and class. But the best part is the food—I fervently believe that you will enjoy one of the best meals of your life here, while making friends with the chef and owner, Moe.

From the snow-capped peaks of Italy to the azure waters and the broiling deserts, the cuisine of the Mediterranean is diverse and delicious and there is no better chef to introduce you to it then Moe. He is a hands-on Mediterranean chef in the classical sense of the word—truly an expert and enthusiast who pays attention to every last detail. His menu is constantly changing based upon in-season ingredients and what’s fresh. He believes in “slow-food,” as in he does not rush you. His restaurant only seats 35 to 40 people and he would rather you spent three hours eating than turn your table over. In fact, he told me that if you’re in a rush, don’t come to eat. With special ambiance, precise and balanced food, and care for his customers, Moe’s truly offers an excellent eating experience.

Moe's Bistro, Lebanon, Shrimp MartiniA few of Moe’s current menu items include a beautiful grilled vegetable tower: an amazing combination of fresh and grilled vegetables all stacked together in a beautiful display with a little hummus and a drizzle of balsamic.

Then there is the shrimp martini: warm garlic shrimp served with an array of sautéed vegetables and leafy greens in a martini glass.

Even the simple, warm pita topped with baba ganoush was amazing.

Moe's Bistro, Lebanon, Baba Ganoush

All of the entrées—from the penne to the swordfish to the sirloin steak—look amazing and are served with “Seven and Seven.” No, it’s not a drink, it’s seven potatoes and seven sautéed vegetables combined together to create a mouth-watering accompaniment to your entrée. Delicious.

Moe's Bistro, Chef Moe, Lebanon

Moe’s Bistro, with its quintessential Mediterranean feel and beautiful entrees, is my pick for date night in Hunterdon County! It’s open on Tuesdays for lunch then Wednesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner. Reservations are highly recommended, as there is no waiting area. So go pick up a great bottle of wine and head on over to Moe’s for an intimate dining experience like no other. Tell him Jen, the MealDiva, sent you. Enjoy!

Beers and Babes at AC Bottle Company

It was really a no-brainer. When you get an invitation to spend a Sunday afternoon hanging out with beer author Gary Monterosso, and sample beer pairings and some of the tastiest food in Atlantic City in a room full of female beer-lovers, you say yes.

This event was put together by Tara Nurin, beer writer and founder of Beer for Babes, an informal band of women dedicated to exploring better beer. While the group is female focused, they do invite men to their events so I didn’t have to dress in drag to attend. It would have been worth it though. If you are a woman interested in exploring the craft beer scene check out their Facebook page. I’ve been jealous of their events for some time so it was great to finally get to one!

Tara Nurin and Gary Monterosso

The guest of honor, Gary Monterosso, (pictured above left) is one guy you need to have a beer with. He is the author of Artisan Beer and shares his knowledge in a casual, witty way while keeping things lively with stories and anecdotes. Head over to his website and find out where he’ll be next. If you get the chance, ask him about the time the original beer bard, Michael Jackson, slept over his house or how he ended up on the History Channel.

Jacqui from the soon to be opened Rinn Duin Brewery in Toms River
Jacqui from the soon to be opened Rinn Duin Brewery in Toms River

The group was rounded out by photographers, beer bloggers, one birthday and Jacqui from the soon to be opened Rinn Duin Brewery in Toms River.

The stars of this show, however, were the parings. The Atlantic City Bottle Company is one of the gambling mecca’s newest gems. Its North Albany Avenue location makes it a nice, quiet alternative to the bustling boardwalk scene. There is a quality bottle shop in front but the back room is where our event took place.

Chef Kevin Cronin AC Bottle CompanyThe Iron Room is a cozy little bar and lounge that features the very talented Chef Kevin Cronin and a thoughtful tap selection (not to mention wine and whiskey)! It’s worth a visit just for the beer, but let’s take a look at the fare.

AC bottle shops apple and parsnip soup with Prosecco and fennelFirst up was the apple and parsnip soup with Prosecco and fennel. The pairing for it was a surprise — cider. Cider is quickly gaining popularity and proved to be a perfect match. Produced by Farnum Hill, it was fairly dry and had a pleasant earthy quality that really let the apple shine. It left me to rethink a beverage I would not normally reach for.

sweet potato with beerTuckahoe Brewing is one of South Jersey’s premier breweries and was featured in the second and perhaps most interesting pairing of the day. Their pumpkin ale came out with shaved sweet potato, pine nuts and shaved parmigiana. The sweet potatoes were cooked like fresh pasta would be done — a quick bath in boiling water. Indeed, the result looked just like pasta. Sweet potato pie is often a stand-in for pumpkin pie because the same spices marry well with both. It was only natural that pumpkin ale would be a wonderful complement.

squab with beerThere’s something to be said for finishing with a flourish. Chef Kevin certainly did that by creating a little conundrum for himself. He presented squab two ways: a fried chicken-style leg and breast meat with a Shirah, balsamic and molasses reduction. Is there one beer for both of those dishes? I would have said no, but Ommegang Game of Thrones Take the Black Stout did it. It was a clever choice and a prime example of how creative the Atlantic City Bottle Company is with flavor.

Keep an eye out for more beer related events at the AC Bottle Company. I think they had as much fun presenting this pairing as we did partaking in it.

Peter Culos is the editor of “Beer Bites,” a monthly feature about breweries, bars and good beer in the Garden State. A graphic designer by day, and a lifelong New Jersey resident, Peter was  introduced to the novel idea that beer could actually have flavor during several visits to the UK. He’s been riding the craft beer bus ever since. It has been called the ultimate social lubricant and Peter’s philosophy on beer is, “I’d rather split my last good beer with a friend than drink the whole thing by myself.” Besides beer he also likes history, dogs, Jeeps and painting. Peter has written a History and Art blog for the Weider History Group and occasionally contributes to his own blog, history-geek.com. Life is short. Drink good beer.

Bridgewater Commons, Crêpes Du Nord

cooking_crepes_2

Crêpes, anyone? We say “Oui” when they are perfectly prepared at Crêpes Du Nord. We visited their New Jersey location in the Bridgewater Commons Mall, where delicious crêpes were made right before our eyes.

Crêpes Du Nord combines French and Scandinavian crêpe-making traditions with ingredients that are locally sourced from Blenheim Hill Farm, their own farm in the Catskills. Organic and always fresh, customers can expect to enjoy savory and sweet crêpes prepared to their exact liking. The menu has delicious combinations and includes vegan and vegetarian choices.

Banana&_Stra_&_Ice_cream

Sweet crêpes are made with fine-milled wheat flour and savory crêpes are made with organic buckwheat flour. There are also gluten-free crêpes for just $1.50 extra.

We tried several of the varieties including their popular Chicken Asparagus ($8.75) and their Crêpe Vegetarienne ($8.25). Fresh fruits compliment many of the sweet crêpes and offer a taste of Paris. Their Pure and Simple ($4.50) is sweetened with sugar, butter and lemon; there are rich choices that include Nutella, ice cream or whipped cream.

Crêpes Du Nord allows for good eating when you are on the go. Fresh, local and organic ingredients make foods taste better and they pride themselves in being “farm to crêpe.”

This is a great spot for our readers who appreciate local sourcing and organic ingredients. We are always in favor of restaurants that prepare your menu items to order letting you make choices that are in line with your individual dietary requirements. So next time you want a tasty crêpe prepared just right, visit your nearest location of Crêpes Du Nord.

Back up to Food Trucks & Fire Pits at Laurita Winery

There may have been a chill in the air, but the day was spectacular for those of us who bundled up and ventured to check out the Food Trucks & Fire Pits Event hosted by Laurita Winery in New Egypt on November 2 and 3.

It looked like a shopaholic’s version of an amazing flea market, with trucks and vendors lined up neatly on an endless dirt row, tempting all Foodies with their diverse offerings. And they were very successful in their tempting!

We walked the full length, snaking our way through the mob of folks who waited patiently to see if the food was as exceptional as the names and logos on the trucks. With wine in hand, most were already munching on spiral-cut fried potatoes on a stick, Belgian waffles with the most unusual toppings, and classic Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches.

After surveying the 20 trucks in the lineup, we opted for warm lobster rolls from Surf and Turf, which we paired with Laurita’s crisp, grassy chardonnay. At first glance, neither of us was very impressed, but when we had a taste, we were both speechless. This little unassuming split-top roll was packed with flavor, big time! The lobster was in generous chunks that were sweet and buttery, slathered in a mango and jalapeño salsa and blanketed with a layer of fresh, sautéed kale and cabbage—very luscious. And oh yes, delicious! We understand now why they were voted the Best Food Truck in Ocean City!

Next stop was a clever little sardine can of a food truck called Dark Side of the Moo, hailing from Hoboken. Not more than 20 square feet, this truck was tricked out with a grill, a steam table, a refrigerator, and a working counter. Their ability to pack in their foodstuffs and function throughout the day was nothing short of a miracle. Their menu offered wild boar burgers and buffalo or alligator sausage sandwiches. After a nice, friendly chat with Trevor, we purchased elk burgers, which we paired with Laurita’s Barcelona red, a nice round Cabernet-merlot blend that complemented the elk perfectly. Very good, very fresh, loved the burger!

WAYNE-DARK SIDE OF THE MOO

Right about then might have been a good time to say “Enough!” but no, we just kept right on indulging our curiosity as our eyes fixated on The Morris Truck menu, specializing in various grilled sandwiches like bacon-delicate cheese and NY State cheddar with NH Landaff Gouda corn and chile butter. Crazy stuff!

Making up our minds was no small feat. Next on our lineup was the most awesome grilled cheese either of us had ever eaten: close your eyes and imagine how decadent truffle cheese married with caramelized shallots, and wedged between two slices of Jewish rye slathered in truffle butter and grilled to a toasty perfection could be. We didn’t have to imagine, we got the real deal. Ah-mazing is the only word to describe it!

Realizing our limits, we opted out of dessert and wrapped up the night with friends, finishing our wine around a bonfire while singing (off key) along to Pennington Station Band, which was cranking out some of our favorites tunes from the ’70s.

Life is good at Laurita. We’re going back!

Anne & Wayne Galya photoWayne and Anne Galya learned how exciting food could be back in Junior High, when the Wood Shop class elective was completely filled and his guidance counselor encouraged the guys who didn’t make the cut to take Cooking, instead.  “Why would I want take a cooking class? Wait a minute…cooking = girls! Heck yeah, sign me up!”  And there began his love affair with all things relating to food, making it, serving it, eating it…. Back in those days (the 70s) Culinary Art Careers had not yet become the rage, so I didn’t consider it an option and when I graduated from high school, I began a 39 year career as an Industrial Electrician.  But, I never lost my passion for the Art, and even produced my own CIA chef, my son Wayne! One of the greatest joys I have is seeing what other chefs are doing, as it challenges me in my own kitchen. Many friends and family have enjoyed the re-creation of dishes that I have savored in France Italy and the Caribbean, as well as regional dishes from across the US.

The North End Bistro in Princeton

Princeton is known for its diverse culture and outstanding cuisine. Being a food-enthusiastic resident of the small, restaurant-barren farm town next door, I have come to love Princeton my go to spot for a culinary fix. With more choices for locally sustainable food than there are highway exits in New Jersey, standing out in the crowd in Princeton can be a challenge for a restaurant. Had I not been taking a trip to Whole Earth in order to satisfy my inherent need to make everything from scratch, I would never have stumbled on a hidden gem nestled in a shopping center. After seeing the “coming soon” sign in the window, I instantly hopped on my phone to find out what this place was all about. Six months and four trips back later I have come to love the “comfort food with class” style cooking of the North End Bistro.

Inside the restaurant you’ll find chic purple and green décor, dark wood tables and modern metal chairs, and a menu with an entire section dedicated to one of the most delicious foods the culinary gods blessed this earth with: mac and cheese. If the trendy-yet-relaxing feel of the restaurant isn’t enough to draw you in, the mouth-watering combinations of cheesy covered pasta goodness will. Of course, if swirls of pasta and creamy cheese  aren’t your thing, there’s still an entire menu of other upscale comfort foods from which to choose.

fish and chips at the North End Bistro in PrincetonEach unique dish taste like “your momma’s meals” with a makeover. No offense to moms out there, including my own, but until I sampled the genius creations of North End, I had never experienced the sinful deliciousness of brioche grilled cheese. This is not your ordinary two slices of Kraft Singles on Wonder Bread. They pair gooey fontina and provolone with sweet and smokey cherry wood bacon, then top it off with creamy avocado and the juicy pop of a Jersey fresh tomato. If that’s not the greatest thing since sliced bread, I don’t know what is.

If you’re feeling more “on a roll” try the North End lobster roll. I have to say it is one of the best lobster rolls I have ever had the pleasure of eating. What makes this particular roll special is the unexpected presence of bacon and avocado. Each luscious, lobster-filled bite is made extra creamy by the avocado, while the crunch of smokey salty bacon offers the perfect textural contrast. The creative mixture is nestled inside buttered brioche toast and served with a side of hot and crispy fries. Whoever said New England does it better has never had the delicious treat of a lobster roll from the North End Bistro (or seen Super Bowl XLVI).

The appetizer menu offers everything you would expect to see at a true Jersey restaurant. On it you will find dishes like bruschetta, disco fries, and spinach and artichoke dip.  However, as the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy teaches us, “it’s an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem.” The bruschetta is made from ahi tuna and is served on a wonton, the spinach dip is peppered with shaved truffles, and the fresh-cut disco fries are smothered in provolone cheese and homemade gravy. Each appetizer is made fresh and served piping hot for a very affordable price.

North End Bistro Salad

The experience of eating at the North End Bistro makes an already outstanding meal that much better. The staff is friendly and attentive, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the owners come out to greet you—that alone is something you do not find in many restaurants. Paired with the comfort style food with a twist it feels like an episode of Leave it Beaver gone Technicolor. Every dish is made from fresh, local ingredients and served with a side of creativity. For a chance to let out your inner child, visit the North End in Princeton.

As the author of the blog the Dexterous Diner, Christine chronicles her efforts as she indulges her foodie side on her very small budget which she likes to call “champagne dining on a beer budget”. She grew up being yelled at by an old Italian woman in the kitchen who was surprisingly not her mother. Her love of food grew from a combination of cooking in a restaurant and fond memories of creating scrumptious meals from scratch with her father. Today she travels around the state of New Jersey and beyond searching for new twists on her old favorites; foods that bring you back to your childhood in a modern and sophisticated way. She loves unexpected and creative combinations, both in the food she eats and cooks. Though her palate has become more refined, she is still excited by a grilled cheese sandwich; that, and a great cup of coffee.

Oh’ Brian’s On The Green in Clark

Oh brians interior2 2Clark’s 1300 Raritan Road is no stranger to change. What was once the Tex-Mex hotspot favorite, Senorita’s, two Brians—French Culinary Institute trained Executive Chef Brian Walter, alongside his partner, Brian Costello—have replaced the fiery atmosphere with a romantic pub fare for the second Union County location at Oh’ Brian’s On the Green.

Walter has a background in traditional pub fare with extensive experience working with New York City’s elite eateries such as The French Embassy, Mario Batali’s Pó, Le Cirque 2000, Lespinasse, Gustavino’s and The Union Club. After his return to the Garden State, Walter’s passion for fresh ingredients and fine dining seasonal weekly specials caught the attention of Brian Costello, and soon after, Walter’s culinary mastermind made a baby named Oh’ Brian’s Pourhouse, born in Fanwood. With the Fanwood eatery still going strong, Costello partnered with Walter again, this time with its sister restaurant, a casually romantic à la carte restaurant that overlooks the breathtaking landscape of the Hyatt Hills Golf Course in Clark.

The packed bar section hasn’t changed since the Senorita’s days; however, the quaintly lit area was chock full of busy and friendly bartenders in cute, plaid skirts. After a 20-minute wait, my boyfriend, James, and I were able to sit in the newly renovated dining area that donned low, dark chandeliers accompanied by the simple elegance of autumnal ambience.

With no specials prepared for the night, our friendly staff was knowledgeable about the copious menu. The appetizer selection was topped with 16 choices—ranging from Osso Buco marrow bones, Hoppin’ Popper’s frog legs, fish tacos, jumbo prawns, among others. We chose to share the Jumbo Prawns which came at 13 dollars. It was served beyond bite-sized—think crushed—cloaked with a spicy pico de gallo sauce. For those who would rather taste the seafood and liberally use the sauce, choose something else—even though the pico de gallo is a delicious choice for whole prawns, yet not for the price.

As for our entrée, James ordered the filet mignon, which, at an à la carte eatery, came with roasted potatoes and green beans for $30. The beef was perfectly medium rare, and with an even generous size with the mignon title. Tender and juicy, “This was perfect,” James said. Walters didn’t skimp on the sides, either—the copious amount of garlic and oil drizzled green beans was deliciously accompanied to the herbed starch. Although pricey for a rather casual place, the filet was worth every penny.

Although the menu had some delectable choices such as roasted duck, blue fin tuna and New Orleans pudding (which came with corn bread pudding), I decided to go with Walter’s traditional with a swanky spin of pub fare—ale-battered fish and chips. At $16, the 10-ounce cod was fried flawlessly—with the amber batter complementing the flaky and buttery fish inside its salty pocket.  At first, the single piece seems excessive, since the roasted chips leave a blank space on the white plate. Fear not, for it is plenty—and sapid.

There was no dessert menu to speak of, and our server didn’t mention any, but with our palates satiated, a sweet treat wasn’t even on our brains.

As the Clark’s beloved Senorita’s has gone and passed, regular patrons may feel vulnerable to an upscale change, however, with an Executive Chef with four-star New York City status and an already successful restaurant just around the corner, Oh’ Brian’s On the Green is a palatable pledge for those who crave beyond better cuisine.
