Crafting Excellence: Discovering Bellview Winery with Winemaker David Gardner

0

Nestled in the heart of Landisville, NJ, Bellview Winery stands as a testament to the region’s rich agricultural heritage and evolving wine scene. I had the pleasure of speaking with David Gardner, the passionate winemaker and general manager of Bellview, who shared insights into the winery’s history, his personal journey into winemaking, and the exciting future that lies ahead.

Bellview Winery interview with David Gardner for Jersey Bites.

A Legacy Rooted in Agriculture

Bellview Winery’s story begins long before the first grapevine was planted. Established as a vegetable farm in 1914 by Angelo and Maria Quarella, the land has remained in the same family for over a century. “We’ve been a winery since 2000,” Gardner said. “Before that, we were a vegetable farm, and it’s always been in the same family. The winery sits on 20 acres of grounds with the original farmhouse built in the early 1900s.” However, it was Jim Quarella who started the winery in 2000, with his wife, Nancy, and is the fourth generation farming this soil.

The winery, now spanning 150 acres with about 45 acres dedicated to grapevines, boasts nearly 25 varieties of grapes. “We’re a vineyard first and foremost,” Gardner said. This emphasis on quality viticulture has led Bellview to produce a wide range of wines that appeal to both connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike.

A Journey from Music to Winemaking

Gardner’s path to winemaking is as unique as the wines he crafts. “I was actually studying music education in college and played in a progressive funk rock band,” he said. “But as often happens, our passion for music didn’t quite match the market demand. I didn’t finish college; I started working at Bellview in 2005. Then I moved from working in the vineyard to winemaking pretty early on and became the winemaker in 2009.”

Despite his shift from music to winemaking, Gardner continues to nurture his love for music by teaching drum lessons. In fact, after our interview, he was heading to a drum lesson with five students.

The Art—and Science—of Winemaking

Gardner’s passion for winemaking is evident as he describes the blend of science and artistry that goes into each bottle. “There’s a lot of science, but also a lot of art,” he said. “Every season and harvest bring something different. You have to keep adapting and changing. It’s a lot of work, but it’s very rewarding.”

Bellview Winery’s dedication to quality and innovation is reflected in their diverse portfolio. Gardner highlights the unique terroir of their southern New Jersey location, with its sandy loam soils that are ideal for grape cultivation. “Our property is well-suited for grapes,” he said. “We’ve been farming for a long time, so we know what works and what doesn’t. We only grow what we believe will thrive here.”

Bellview Winery interview with David Gardner for Jersey Bites.

Spotlight on San Marco

One of Bellview’s standout offerings is the San Marco varietal, a grape with a fascinating backstory. “San Marco is a variety bred in the Trentino Alto-Adige region in Italy,” Gardner said. “Larry Coia, part owner of Bellview and Grape grower in nearby Vineland, brought it over after working with Marco Stefanini at the Edmund Mach Foundation. It’s very dark, flavorful, and extremely food-friendly. We’ve been very pleased with its performance.”

Catering to Consumer Tastes

Bellview Winery’s extensive portfolio caters to a wide range of tastes, from dry reds and whites to sweeter fruit wines. Gardner emphasizes their commitment to quality across all types. “We’ve always made blueberry and cranberry wines since the beginning,” he said. “They’re very popular, and we make them with the same care as our other wines.”

Looking Ahead

As Bellview Winery looks to the future, Gardner envisions greater visibility and accessibility for their wines. “We’d love to see more New Jersey wines on restaurant menus,” he said. “It’s a perception issue, not a quality issue. Getting our wines into consumers’ hands through restaurants and events is a priority.”

Gardner’s favorite wine for a hot day like today? “The Traminette is perfect,” he said. “It’s just off-dry and very crisp. For reds, I’d go with our Cabernet Franc. Both are excellent representations of what we can achieve here at Bellview.”

This exciting initiative focuses on showcasing the incredible diversity of wines from the Mid-Atlantic, with a strong emphasis on sustainable practices and local terroir.

Adam Torine and Amy Russo

This new venture marks a significant milestone in the continued growth of Toast under the leadership of Amy Russo and Adam Torine. With established locations in Asbury Park, Red Bank, Montclair, and the recently opened Toast in Cranford, the Manalapan location will be the fifth Toast restaurant in the Garden State.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring Toast to Manalapan and the surrounding communities,” said Russo. “Our goal is to bring the unique charm and flavors that have made Toast a favorite breakfast and lunch spot for over 17 years with another location in Monmouth County.”

Toast menu items

Guests can look forward to Toast’s signature breakfast classics such as eggs benedict, omelets, and the southwest breakfast bowl. Additional options include the indulgent red velvet and carrot cake pancakes.

The lunch menu will feature a variety of options, from healthy artisan salads, avocado toast, and wraps. Heartier choices, like gourmet grilled cheese and build-your-own burgers will also be available.

“Manalapan is the perfect place for Toast to continue our expansion across New Jersey,” said Torine. “We can’t wait to welcome the community into our Toast family and to create a space where friends and families can come together to enjoy great food and make lasting memories.”

bernadette: Small Plates for Big Appetites

I found a place in Scotch Plains so good that I feel the need to tell people about it, even if it means I’ll get a later reservation on a random Wednesday night. bernadette has all the feels of a restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, but without, you know, all the hipsters. It offers a seasonal menu of Mediterranean-inspired shareables and signature plates.

Well-coiffed mixologists with tatted forearms craft drinks with the skills of a baby-faced Tom Cruise in Cocktail. And the open-floor dining room blends itself into a posh lounge and bar area. This all happens under the careful eye of Ms. Bernadette, a hanging portrait of the restaurant’s namesake and the beautiful mother of one of the owners.

A Holiday-Movie-Channel Kind of Origin

You know those Hallmark movies that usually star someone who was once on Full House and have a storm or other catastrophe that brings the main characters together? That’s how the idea for bernadette came to be.

According to the website, Melody DeGaetano, owner of Black Drop Coffee was determined to save her recently opened shop from the damage caused by Hurricane Ida. Seeing her struggle, Ryan Hampton, a regular customer, dropped off a much-needed bottle of wine and jokingly suggested that “the town could use a place to go drink.” Unlike those movies, however, where the characters ultimately fall for one another, this obligatory love story became Melody and Ryan’s passion and shared vision for delicious food and amazing cocktails. And like that, they teamed up to create bernadette. And the restaurant has lived happily ever after.

Restaurant in Scotch Plains, NJ

Sumptuous Sips

This spot is not your typical neighborhood bar. It features a rotating list of local Jersey breweries on tap as well as a choice of two ready-made cocktails steeping in glass decanters. The first is a serrano-infused Pueblo Viejo Tequila. The other is a house-made Boulevardier made with Brooklyn-distilled, Fort Hamilton double-barrel bourbon, Contratto bitters liqueur, and Cocchi di Torino vermouth.

Mixed in among classics like Paper Planes and Sazeracs, the drink menu features several signature cocktails like the sparkling College Dropout, made with vodka, vanilla, passionfruit, and cava. Or you can choose to put your faith in the barkeep and get his Dealer’s Choice, aka the gin and tonic of the week. And there’s always my personal favorite, a Ford’s Gin martini with Manchego-stuffed olives. Delish!

The wine list offers over 50 bottles of lesser-known European red and white varietals chosen specifically to pair perfectly with bernadette’s elevated cuisine.

Fantastic Fare

Bernadette in Scotch Plains, NJ

According to Melody, the original concept of Bernadette was to be a cocktail parlor. But after they hired an amazing kitchen staff, they knew they had something special. Now the menu is as descriptive as a Bret Easton Ellis novel. I recommend ordering at least three dishes per person, to share. If you’re like me, you’ll probably start thinking about your fourth dish halfway through your first course.

Honestly, I’ve yet to have a lackluster dish. But if you are looking for suggestions, check out the chorizo-stuffed, bacon-wrapped dates in a spicy diablo sauce. You’ll find three options of seasonal croquetas. These include my current fave: melted leeks and raclette with a crunchy exterior and luxuriously cheesy inside. The restaurant serves them over a tarragon aioli. And be forewarned, the fried Castelvetrano olives stuffed with Cabrales blue cheese in a Calabrian chili sauce are certifiably addictive.

Cocktails in Scotch Plains, NJ

If you really want to indulge, order the 32-oz, dry-aged, bone-in ribeye with shoestring potatoes, pickled red onions, and a sherry chimichurri.

My first visit was incredible, but it could have been simple luck. My second visit confirmed the first wasn’t a fluke. And after this last visit, I can officially say bernadette is my new favorite Jersey spot. And it doesn’t hurt that it’s in my backyard. Put this Scotch Plains gem on your radar. And add the address to your Uber app. You’ll want to try multiple cocktails.

You can make a reservation online up to one month in advance. Some items on the menu can be tailored for a vegetarian or vegan diet as well. The restaurant is open Wednesday through Saturday, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Hours and menu items are subject to change.

Harpoon Willy’s Announces New Locations

The Jersey Shore Restaurant Group (The JSRG) recently announced its expansion plans for Harpoon Willy’s in Robbinsville at 2360 State Highway 33 and in Waretown at 537 Route 9, as well as its third restaurant concept coming to Manasquan and Monroe: Coastal Canteen.

The introduction of Harpoon Willy’s to Waretown reimagines the group’s original vision of Three Story Grill, however plans are still on track to open an adjacent banquet venue for celebrations and gatherings.

Originally opened in 1986 on the Manasquan River at 2655 River Road, Harpoon Willy’s was revitalized and reopened in 2008 by The JSRG partners John Kitrick, Jack Kane, and James Scarponi. The restaurant has become renowned for offering comfort and quality fare in a rustic, historic setting that beautifully complements its waterfront views.

Maintaining Its Sensibility

As Harpoon Willy’s expands into the Robbinsville and Waretown communities, The JSRG says it will maintain the beloved atmosphere through the familiar menu staples, interior features, and energy that have made the Manasquan River location so popular.

“The Harpoon Willy’s establishment on the Manasquan River has seen more than two centuries of history, and we’re thrilled to be continuing its legacy in Robbinsville, Waretown, and eventually beyond,” said John Kitrick, CEO and CFO at The JSRG.

“From familiar wooden rafters and stone fireplaces that will warmly accentuate the dining rooms and bars, to menus which will feature our beloved dishes and daily specialties, we’re looking forward to bringing Harpoon Willy’s to new communities, and welcoming guests to experience the charm that has consistently defined it,” he said.

Looking Ahead

Renovations for the Robbinsville location are underway, with an anticipated opening of late fall 2024. Construction plans are also in motion for Waretown — both Harpoon Willy’s and the yet-to-be-named banquet venue — with further updates on opening expected in early 2025.

While the Harpoon Willy’s expansion is in the works, The JSRG is also bringing a third restaurant concept to life. Coastal Canteen, opening in Monroe later this fall and in Manasquan in 2025, will be a coastal dining retreat inspired by the flavor profiles of Mexico, northern Africa, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean, and offer a dynamic cocktail program that celebrates the tequilas, mezcals and rums from these regions. Renovations are currently in motion for the Monroe location, which will be situated in the site of the former Tios El Taco in Gables Plaza.

In addition to Coastal Canteen, Harpoon Willy’s, and its event venue in Waretown, The JSRG also owns and operates Half Moon Point, a contemporary dining destination in Point Pleasant, New Jersey.

Icarus Brewing Soars in Its New Home

The long-awaited new Icarus Brewing, in Brick, NJ, is just about a reality. Jason Goldstein, owner and creator of the much loved Yacht Juice, is taking his new brewery for a series of shake-down cruises before the big grand opening on Saturday, July 20, 2024. New Jersey craft beer fans are ready to set sail with him!

Goldstein planned the series of soft openings in order to fine tune the new, state-of-the-art brewhouse and the tap system. Built from the ground up, the new location is many times the size of the old tap room, in Lakewood.

It’s an open, soaring space with separate areas for private events. You’ll even find a mezzanine that looks out over the main tap room. Large garage-type doors at the front of the building open up to a beautiful beer garden and the brand-new building’s entrance. The beer garden is complete with tables and umbrellas as well as some Adirondack chairs circled around a fire pit. No more sitting on picnic benches in the parking lot!

To give you an idea of the scale, the indoor capacity has to be about 250 people. They’re going to need all that space too. By the grand opening, Icarus should have 30 unique beers on tap. They’ll be poured from two banks of 30 taps, at each end of the bar. That’s a lot of beer! And, with that many to chose from, there is something for everyone’s taste.

So Much to Choose From

People know Icarus for its big hazy IPAs and killer imperial stouts. But you’ll also have choices like Two Out Rally, a 3.5% ABV Pilsner that’s packed with flavor and is still crisp and bright. At the other end of the spectrum, there’s Take It Into Overtime. This one is a big, boozy, Belgian Quadruple that brings caramel and clove notes into a 10.3% ABV slow sipper.

Planned With Care

One of the things I took away from my first visit to the new Icarus Brewing is just how well thought out everything is. This shouldn’t be a surprise. Goldstein didn’t take the usual “home-brew-hobbyist-to-professional” route that most industry people follow. He had his sights on going pro right from the start. And it shows. It comes through in the quality of the beer and is evident in the brewery’s beautiful new home.

Tomasello Winery’s Lambertville Tasting Room: A Delightful Journey

0

Tucked into North Union Street in the charming town of Lambertville, NJ, you’ll find Tomasello Winery’s tasting room. This spot offers an inviting escape for wine enthusiasts and casual sippers alike.

Known for its rich history and dedication to crafting exquisite wines, Tomasello Winery has firmly established itself as a premier destination for wine lovers across New Jersey.

A Legacy of Excellence

Tomasello Winery, a family-owned and operated business since 1933, brings nearly a century of winemaking expertise to every bottle they produce. And with its roots deeply planted in the heart of the Garden State, Tomasello Winery has grown to become one of New Jersey’s most renowned wineries over four generations. And they pride themselves on using locally sourced grapes to create wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region.

The story of Tomasello Winery began with the vision of an immigrant family determined to make their mark on the American wine industry. Frank Tomasello, the founder, embarked on this journey with a passion for agriculture and winemaking. The family initially focused on growing fruit and producing bulk wine. And over the decades, a true commitment to quality and innovation transformed Tomasello Winery into the esteemed establishment it is today.

With each generation came new ideas and techniques. Their approaches always blend tradition with modern winemaking practices to create wines that are both distinctive and high in quality. This legacy of excellence is evident in every sip, as Tomasello Winery continues to garner accolades as it maintains a loyal customer base.

Marissa Muoio writes about Tomasello Winery's tasting room in Lambertville, NJ, for Jersey Bites.

The Lambertville Experience

Walking into the Lambertville tasting room, I was immediately struck by the warm, welcoming atmosphere. The rustic yet elegant décor, combined with the knowledgeable and friendly staff, make for an inviting space that encourages visitors to relax and savor the experience. In addition, the tasting room offers a delightful variety of Tomasello’s wines, each thoughtfully displayed and easily accessible for tasting.

You’ll find this destination strategically located in one of New Jersey’s most picturesque towns, known for its vibrant arts scene, charming boutiques, and scenic views along the Delaware River. This setting adds to the overall allure of the tasting room, making it a perfect destination for a day trip or a leisurely afternoon outing.

The tasting room staff provided a brief overview of Tomasello Winery’s history and the different wine offerings available. I immediately noticed the staff’s enthusiasm and knowledge. And the tasting room itself is designed to cater to both novice wine drinkers and seasoned connoisseurs, with a range of options to suit every palate.

A Tasting Journey

During my visit, I explored an array of Tomasello’s wines, each presenting unique profiles and expert craftsmanship. Here are the tasting notes for a few of the offerings I tried:

  • 2021 OCP Blaufrankisch: This wine stands out with its vibrant red color and complex flavors. Aromas of dark cherry and blackberry are balanced with a hint of spice and smooth tannins, making it a robust yet approachable choice.
  • 2021 OCP Sangiovese: Known for its rustic elegance, this Sangiovese features earthy tones with a backbone of ripe, red fruits. Its well-rounded acidity and structured tannins pair wonderfully with hearty dishes.
  • 2022 OCP Syrah: The syrah offers a rich palate of dark fruits, including blackberries and plums, with a spicy black pepper finish. It’s bold yet silky, with a lingering complexity that’s truly memorable.
  • American Pinot Grigio: Crisp and refreshing, this pinot grigio shines with notes of green apple and citrus. Its light body and bright acidity make it a perfect companion to light salads. It also works well as a refreshing drink on its own.
  • 2023 Palmaris OCP Chardonnay Reserve: An exemplary Chardonnay that features a delicate balance of oak and fruit. Notes of vanilla and butter are complemented by a subtle minerality, offering a creamy yet refreshing finish.
  • Orange Cream: Part of the “Incredible Creams” line, this dessert wine is a delightful treat. Blending the essence of orange and cream, it provides a sweet, velvety finish that’s reminiscent of a gourmet creamsicle.

Tomasello Winery's tasting room is in a charming neighborhood in Lambertville, NJ, covered by Marissa Muoio, for Jersey Bites.

True Dedication

Each wine reflects the Tomasello family’s dedication. They prioritize producing premier wines that are both a tribute to their rich history and a toast to gatherings with loved ones.

The combination of exceptional wines, a welcoming atmosphere, and the scenic backdrop of Lambertville makes for an unforgettable day out. I look forward to visiting their other locations and vineyard in the near future!
