Park Place Prime: Bally’s Newest Dining Destination

An Evening, at Park Place Prime.

Note: The restaurant and hotel provided a complimentary experience in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own and reflect my genuine impressions of the food, service, and overall experience.

A steakhouse that truly excels in every aspect—from the crafted cocktails to the main course and the indulgent desserts—is something truly remarkable, and Park Place Prime at Ballys Atlantic City definitely hits the mark on all fronts.

First Impressions & Cocktails

We kicked things off with cocktails – the Italian Bourbon and The Smokehouse, and let me tell you—the presentation was absolutely gorgeous. The Smokehouse is a smoked old fashioned and one of five signature old fashioneds on the menu. It is presented inside a smoke-filled glass box, concealing the cocktail completely. Once our server opened the box door, the smoke billowed out, and the beautiful cocktail was revealed. The smoky aroma lingers on the nose for the whole cocktail experience, which is the point.

The Italian Bourbon featuring Buffalo Trace whiskey, amaro dell’Etna, and Italian cherry liqueur mixed with Carpano Antica vermouth and a dash of bitters was beautifully balanced and quite elegant.

If you enjoy a crafted cocktail with a hint of sophistication and style, this is the spot to treat yourself.

The Food: Meatballs, Lamb Chops and Steak, Oh My

Park Place Prime's Korean Wagyu Meatballs
Korean Wagyu Meatballs

We started with their signature Korean Wagyu Meatballs, and I was immediately impressed. They were incredibly tender, with a subtle kick of spice that made each bite better than the last. I was worried they’d be too filling, knowing that we had steak and lamb chops coming, but honestly, they’re so light and flavorful that they’re the perfect starter to get you excited for what’s next.

Prime Wedge salad

Before diving into our entrees, I started with the Prime Wedge salad. This one had a fun twist: pickled red onion and a deviled egg, which added a little extra tang and richness to the usual crisp and creamy combination.

Lamb Chops with rosemary jus lié, garlic mashed potatoes, and sautéed spinach

For the main course, my dining partner ordered the Lamb Chops with rosemary jus lié, garlic mashed potatoes, and sautéed spinach.  The chops were cooked to perfection – the outside was lightly charred, and the inside was still pink and incredibly tender. Our waiter told us we should try them with Mint Jelly, which was a nice little throwback, but the real star was the rosemary jus lié. You could drink that sauce with a spoon – it was that good.

Prime Dry Aged New York Strip

I personally couldn’t pass up the Prime Dry Aged New York Strip, cooked to a perfect medium rare with that rich, deep flavor only dry aging can bring out. It was beautifully seared, tender, and exactly what I’d been dreaming about all day.

The Atmosphere

interior of Park Place Prime

Park Place Prime is stylish but doesn’t try too hard. The Leather Bank section, with its blue leather chairs and banquettes, adds a modern yet classic touch, and the custom-made crystal light fixtures and stunning lighting over the bar give the space a little bit of that mid-century glam. It feels upscale without being stuffy—definitely the kind of place where you can settle in, take your time, and enjoy every bite.

Given that it’s located inside a casino, the dress code is pretty casual. Whether you’re coming straight from the casino floor or celebrating something big, you’ll feel comfortable here.

Bally’s Atlantic City has undergone extensive renovations, bringing a fresh and modern feel to the entire property. With newly renovated rooms, upgraded dining experiences, and an enhanced casino floor, the improvements make the hotel and resort an even more exciting destination.

Saving Room for Dessert

I always say a great meal should have a memorable ending, and the strawberry cheesecake was calling my name. I’m a sucker for cheesecake. Pair that with an espresso martini, and you’ve got the kind of finish that makes you linger just a little longer at the table. The toasted marshmallow garnish in our martinis was a fun touch.

Service That Stands Out

I can’t talk about this experience without mentioning the service. From our own server to the others, I overheard chatting with their guests, I could tell that the team at Park Place Prime is very well-trained. They know how to make you feel welcome without being intrusive, which is exactly what you want in a fine dining spot.

Final Thoughts

Park Place Prime delivers on every front—stunning cocktails, perfectly executed dishes, a beautiful atmosphere, and top-notch hospitality. Whether you’re in Atlantic City for a weekend getaway or just looking for a standout dining experience, this place is absolutely worth a visit.

Already thinking about what I’ll order next time!

Newark AllianceInvest Newark, and the City of Newark’s Arts and Education District recently launched “Newark Fan Fest,” a mobile passport for the estimated 19,000 visitors traveling to Downtown Newark during the National College Basketball Playoffs at Prudential Center, set for March 27-29, 2025. By engaging visitors and encouraging Newark residents to explore the Arts and Education District’s small businesses and cultural institutions, the goal is to further strengthen Newark’s reputation as a hub for dining, shopping, and cultural experiences.

“We’re proud to showcase our vibrant downtown with its tourism and destination ecosystem to all who travel here for the courtside thrill of March Madness,” said Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka. “This is an exciting opportunity to activate the vibrancy of our city, spotlight the diversity of our retail and entertainment businesses, and create connections and new memories with visitors and residents alike.”

Ashley Mays, Chief Real Estate and Marketing Officer of Newark Alliance emphasized the broader impact, saying, “We launched Newark Fan Fest to welcome fans in our local businesses and cultural venues during the tournament, but the effort also strengthens Newark’s reputation as a go-to destination for entertainment and nightlife, supporting Newark’s long-term growth.”

The “Newark Fan Fest” mobile pass will be accessible to visitors and residents through the QR code on a convenient and engaging map/mini-guide available at hotels, businesses and online. The pass, which can be accessed here and on the Newark Arts & Education District website (newarkartsandeducation.com), will provide comprehensive details of special events, watch parties, local business and attractions, and exclusive deals and promotions. Additionally, the mobile pass allows the holder to enter a “punch card” game with prizes corresponding to the number of events and businesses attended.

More than 25 businesses in Downtown Newark are participating in Newark Fan Fest, including Bunkr.Tinjune Sports LoungeJust Fish Bar & GrillBar VanquishThe Executive Leaf Cigar LoungeThe Atelier and the newly opened Vault Lounge. Many of these establishments are proudly owned by Newark-based entrepreneurs, showcasing the city’s thriving and supportive small business community. Newark’s prolific arts scene is easy to access for visitors by way of Newark Grounds, a walkable cultural corridor featuring more than 75 consecutive public artworks and dedicated arts and culture spaces. Visitors can access the interactive map on the Project for Empty Space website here.

“Home Court Marketplace,” a vendor and food truck market at Mulberry Commons, produced by the Newark City Parks Foundation, will showcase even more of the city’s offerings and Newark-themed merchandise produced by local makers. Tourism ambassadors, led by local tour company Have You Met Newark Tours, will be visible on the streets in the District, guiding visitors, sharing recommendations, and offering group walking tours.

“This initiative is about creating meaningful connections between visitors and the Newark community,” said Marcus Randolph, CEO of Invest Newark. “We are excited for visitors to experience our local retail, restaurants, and culture during this major event.”

Auburn Road Vineyard & Winery’s Journey to Winemaking Success

0

When Julianne and Scott Donnini realized their fast-paced legal careers were pulling them apart, they knew something had to change. What they didn’t anticipate was that their new path would lead them to become the founders of Auburn Road Vineyard & Winery, a now-thriving destination in Salem County, New Jersey.

Outdoor sipping at Auburn Road Winery

A Leap of Faith

In the early 2000s, Julianne worked as a litigator before transitioning to in-house counsel, while Scott held a demanding role as corporate counsel for the Philadelphia Stock Exchange. The long hours kept them apart. “He was working six and a half, seven days a week,” Julianne recalled. “We weren’t seeing each other.”

Then came September 11, 2001 — a turning point for their family. As the tragic events devastated the financial district, Scott’s workplace lost contact with people they had been speaking to only moments before. The emotional toll spurred Scott to rethink his career and their way of life.

“We realized life is short,” Julianne explained. With that newfound perspective, they left their legal careers behind, gathered a few friends as business partners, and began their journey into winemaking.

From Soil to Sip

Neither Julianne nor Scott had formal winemaking experience, but that didn’t stop them. Julianne took her research skills from her litigation background and immersed herself in understanding the craft. She enrolled in UC Davis’s online winemaking certificate program to learn the science and technique. “It was eye-opening but very West Coast-centric,” she said.

To better understand East Coast winemaking, they turned to Penn State’s seminar on starting a small winery. There, they met Tom Payette, a Virginia-based consultant who became their guide in navigating the complexities of winemaking.

Wine selection from Auburn Road Winery

“We started with purchased grapes,” Julianne said. “We made our first batch in 2004 and bottled our first commercial wine in 2005.” They planted their first vines that same year, expanding the vineyard over time to manage 23 acres while still sourcing grapes from other New Jersey growers.

Auburn Road Winery’s Ties to Community

The name Auburn Road stems from a nearby village that felt symbolic to Julianne and Scott. “Auburn is this tiny village down the road, but all these rural roads branch out from it, and we felt like we were this small yet central part of something bigger,” Julianne shared.

Rather than a flashy, exotic name, they chose something simple yet meaningful. “It sounded American, it sounded country, and it connected to our new hometown.”

Breaking Barriers in Winemaking

Julianne Donnini

Julianne’s role as the lead winemaker in a male-dominated industry makes her unique. While she doesn’t focus much on being the only female winemaker in New Jersey’s Winemakers Co-Op, the significance isn’t lost on her. “I don’t think about it often, but when I looked at the table during our showcase event, I realized I was the only woman sitting there,” she said.

Still, Auburn Road Winery has built a diverse team. “We’ve got women working in the field, in the winery, and in operations,” she said. “I think women just naturally feel more comfortable here.”

Words of Wisdom

For women considering a career in winemaking, Julianne’s advice is clear: “Don’t undersell yourself. Be confident and know your opinion matters. If they don’t accept you for who you are, it’s not the right place for you.”

Looking Ahead

Julianne’s proudest achievement is simple yet profound: “We’re still here,” she said. “We’ve weathered opening a business, unpredictable weather, and even a pandemic.”

Now, Auburn Road is focusing on perfecting its sparkling wine, expanding vineyard experimentation, and creating small-batch wines that embrace unexpected outcomes. Julianne hopes this approach will continue pushing Auburn Road’s creativity forward.

“I want to step back a bit, not be the one physically doing everything, and instead focus on discovering new opportunities and joys in winemaking,” she said.

With resilience, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to learning, Julianne and Scott have transformed Auburn Road into a cornerstone of New Jersey’s wine industry — a place where great wine and heartfelt connections flourish.

The Farella Brothers: A Family Legacy of Flavor

For the Farella brothers—Gavin, Jamie, and Chris—barbecue isn’t just food; it’s family. Growing up in New York with deep roots in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the brothers spent their summers in Beaufort, where they learned the art of Southern cooking from their mother, aunt, and grandmother. Their love for smoked meats and family recipes inspired them to bring authentic North Carolina barbecue to New York State, opening their first Brothers Barbecue in 2008.

Ramsey Location

Their journey has been one of resilience and passion. After a fire, they rebuilt their flagship New Windsor restaurant in 2012, later expanding with Brothers Smokehouse in Ramsey, NJ, in 2020. In 2024, the Farella Brothers proudly introduced their third location: Brothers Barbecue Palisades, located in the heart of West Nyack’s Palisades Center. With each new restaurant, they remain committed to the time-honored techniques and bold flavors that have earned them numerous “Best BBQ” accolades at festivals and in readers’ polls.

Stepping into any Brothers Barbecue location is a feast for the senses—the irresistible aroma of wood smoke, sizzling meats, and the warmth of true Southern hospitality welcome guests. At the new Palisades Center spot, diners will find a custom-built pink smoker, a striking addition that underscores the brothers’ dedication to the craft.

The menu pays homage to their family roots, featuring dishes like Uncle Bo’s Buttermilk Fried Gulf Shrimp, Aunt Edna’s Fried Chicken, and the signature Chopped BBQ, a North Carolina staple of smoked pork dressed in a tangy vinegar-based sauce. Guests can indulge in Brothers’ Legendary Dry Rub Ribs, pepper-crusted smoked Brisket, and Smoked Yard Bird—a 12-hour brined half chicken bursting with flavor. Appetizers include crowd-pleasers like Sticky Ribs, Bacon Burnt Ends, and Hungry Helpers (smoked sausage wrapped in applewood bacon).

For those looking for variety, the 2- and 3-Meat Combos offer a chance to sample the best of the Brothers’ pit-smoked specialties, while the Uncle Dave Sampler Platter is a must-try for BBQ lovers. The menu also features custom-blended burgers, hearty Southern sides, and scratch-made desserts like Banana Pudding, Bread Pudding, and the ever-changing Pie of the Day.

Beyond the food, Brothers Barbecue and Smokehouse locations provide an inviting, communal atmosphere. Designed by Garrett Singer Architecture and Design, the Palisades Center location reflects the brothers’ family heritage, with nostalgic wallpaper inspired by their childhood home and playful pig-themed décor throughout. Guests can unwind at the full bar, which serves craft cocktails, a robust selection of beers, Southern Sweet Tea, and Becca’s Lemonade. In Ramsey, a dedicated music stage hosts a rotating lineup of jazz, blues, and rock acts, further cementing the family’s love for great tunes and good times.

Theresa’s South: Fresh Look – Same Incredible Flavors

If you’re looking for a great spot to dine in Bay Head, New Jersey, let me introduce you to Theresa’s South. This cozy restaurant has been serving delicious food since 2008, and when I heard that the decor recently underwent a major makeover, I had to pay them a visit.

Theresa's South main dining room
Theresa’s South main dining room

Walking in, I immediately noticed the fresh renovations. The space feels brighter with new floors, comfy banquettes, stylish light fixtures, and eye-catching artwork. It’s the kind of place that feels perfect for a casual dinner or a special night out.

Theresa’s South Eggplant Pancake

Theresa’s South switches its menu up seasonally, and since I visited in the winter, I got to try some amazing comfort food dishes. They’re famous for their Eggplant Pancake and Bacon and Cheddar Stuffed Meatloaf—both of which were calling my name. Plus, they make all their pasta in-house, which is always exciting to me.

For Starters

Before the appetizers arrived, warm rolls and house-whipped butter landed on the table—always welcome and dangerously delicious. I had to control myself!

Spiced Yellow Fin Tuna Ceviche

To kick things off, we ordered the Spiced Yellow Fin Tuna Ceviche with house-made chips. It was super fresh and light, with a satisfying crunch from crispy cucumber. My kind of appetizer.

Eggplant Pancake

Their famous Eggplant Pancake starts with a batter similar to a traditional pancake, but I believe that in addition to eggplant, there are some sautéed onions and maybe a bell pepper mixed in, adding a subtle sweetness. I could be wrong; they are not giving out this recipe, that’s for sure. The pancake itself was thin and crisp around the edges, sitting on a bed of rich garlic cream sauce. It was topped with melted mozzarella and Parmesan cheese, roasted peppers, and a drizzle of pesto oil—be sure to get each ingredient on your fork.

Roasted Pear Salad

Next up was the Roasted Pear Salad, and I have to say, it was a standout. The roasted pears were such a nice surprise, pairing perfectly with the gorgonzola and pecans. Tossed with arugula and a light white balsamic vinaigrette, it was a refreshing balance of sweet and savory. I’m not a big Arugula fan, and I loved this salad.

The Main Event

Cappellini with Shrimp

For my main course, I went with the Cappellini with Shrimp. This dish was packed with flavor—tender shrimp, garlic, capers, and Kalamata olives, all mixed into a chunky tomato sauce with white wine. It had just the right balance of briny, tangy, and savory notes, making each bite more enjoyable than the last, not to mention that fresh, house-made pasta.

Rosemary Baby Rack of Lamb

I was told that another standout and new dish on the menu was the Rosemary Baby Rack of Lamb. The meat was incredibly tender, coated in a rich Cabernet wine and fig demi-glace sauce that added a deep, slightly sweet flavor. It came with mashed potatoes and crispy onions, which added the perfect texture contrast. Seriously, it was next-level comfort food.

The Bacon and Cheddar Stuffed Meatloaf

But the dish that surprised me the most? The Bacon and Cheddar Stuffed Meatloaf. This wasn’t your average meatloaf—it had an incredible smoky flavor, and the gooey cheddar inside took it to a whole new level. If you’re a fan of hearty, satisfying dishes, you won’t be disappointed.

Did Someone Say “Dessert?”

Tiramisu

Even though we were pretty full, we couldn’t leave without trying their famous Tiramisu. It was unbelievably light and airy—exactly what you want when you think you can’t handle dessert but also can’t resist.

Speaking of irresistible desserts, we had to sample the Warm Mini Vanilla Cream Bomboloni, served with rich chocolate gelato. These little doughnuts were warm, soft, and filled with luscious vanilla cream, making for the perfect balance of indulgence and satisfaction.

Chocolate Molten Delight

For chocolate lovers, the Chocolate Molten Delight was a dream. Served with vanilla bean gelato, this dessert was pure decadence. The rich, gooey chocolate center paired with the creamy gelato was the ultimate way to end the meal.

Fun Fact about Theresa’s South

One of the coolest details about Theresa’s South is its open roof design, which gives off a rustic barn-like feel. A beautiful chandelier hangs from the ceiling, adding just the right amount of elegance to the cozy space. What makes it even cooler is its history—it used to be home to a pharmacy!

Theresa’s is housed in a historic Spanish Colonial building that just celebrated its 110th year. Originally built in 1914 as Chafey’s Drug Store, the building has witnessed many changes over the years.

They’ve kept a piece of that past alive by keeping the original Apothecary hutch, which has the pharmacy’s name etched in its mirror and adds a unique charm to the space.

Bring Your Own to Theresa’s South

Another thing to note—this is a BYOB restaurant, so bring your favorite bottle of wine to pair with your meal. They also host private events in their Sun Room, which would be a great spot for a bridal shower or small gathering.

Overall, my visit to Theresa’s South was fantastic. The combination of history, cozy ambiance, and incredible food makes this place a must-visit. Whether you’re a local, a summer regular, or just passing through, put this spot on your list—you won’t regret it!

The Atlantic Wine Project’s Mission to Elevate NJ Wines

0

For years, New Jersey’s wine industry has fought for recognition, often overshadowed by the heavyweights of California and France. But now, thanks to a bold move by The Lobby Club in Trenton, New Jersey, wines are taking center stage—proving that local bottles belong in the same conversation as world-renowned vintages.

The Atlantic Wine Project (AWP), founded by Patrick Harney, has partnered with The Lobby Club, an exclusive, membership-based, white-tablecloth establishment in Trenton’s capital district, to showcase wines that capture New Jersey’s distinct character. Under the leadership of General Manager Michael Haelig, the club made a decisive shift, replacing its entire wine inventory with selections from Jardin and Bellview Winery. The idea? “It only made sense that NJ wines should be enjoyed while breaking bread over the business of our state,” Haelig explained.

A Bold Bet on Local Terroir

This move isn’t just a novelty—it’s a statement. For years, New Jersey wines have struggled for respect, often bypassed by distributors who prioritize the more familiar labels from Napa or Bordeaux. But as Harney and his team know, the state’s coastal terroir and distinct soil produce wines that can hold their own.

Expression of Place

On a recent episode of the Trenton Waves podcast, Harney discussed this exact point over a tasting of Jardin White paired with oysters from the Barnegat Oyster Coop and a Jardin Red served alongside The Lobby Club’s signature short ribs. “The Sassos were blown away by the genuine expression of place in these wines,” Harney shared. The Jardin White is a racy blend based on Cayuga, a variety that thrives in NJ’s sandy soils, and the Jardin Red is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Chambourcin, and Blaufrankisch, all of whom find their happy place here in New Jersey. The Barnegat Oyster Collective, one of the State’s premier destinations for locally farmed seafood, chose the Jardin line and Bellview wines as the perfect complement to New Jersey’s homegrown oysters.

The conversation touched on more than just taste. Harney dove into the history of wine mapping—comparing New Jersey’s evolving industry to the meticulous work of Burgundian monks, who centuries ago mapped out vineyards based on the subtle differences in soil and climate. “They took impeccable notes on flowering, fruit set, and ripening,” Harney explained, “and over time, they figured out which plots made the best wines. We’re doing the same thing in New Jersey.”

A Shift in Perception

Despite growing acclaim, New Jersey wines still face an uphill battle. Harney notes visits to a number of Farm to Table restaurants in North Jersey with “Not one Jersey wine on the list,” he noted. “Everything was California and France. Why is farm-to-table dining so popular, but local wine isn’t?”

The stigma, Harney suggests, comes down to marketing and distribution. For years, big distributors have controlled what gets placed on restaurant wine lists, prioritizing mass-market brands over small, independent wineries. “At the end of the day, I want to be the guy bringing the best wine to the table—whatever it is, at an affordable price point,” Harney said.  “Some of it is empirical. Some of it is just… you know it when you taste it.”

Jersey Wines at the Table Where It Matters

With The Lobby Club embracing homegrown vintages, the perception of New Jersey wines is shifting. And the momentum is building with industry insiders—from statehouse officials to wine enthusiasts—experiencing these bottles firsthand. “This is terroir in the making,” Harney said. “It’s the interaction of people, soil, and climate, saying: ‘This is us.’”

As AWP and The Lobby Club continue to push boundaries, one thing is clear—New Jersey wines aren’t just worthy of a seat at the table. They’re here to stay.

Golden Harvest Bowl Honors Black History Month and Chef’s Roots

The Golden Harvest Bowl (Recipe Below)

In celebration of Black History Month, Marcus Live! Bar & Grille at American Dream is paying tribute to the vibrant culinary traditions of the African diaspora with a dish inspired by the bold, soulful flavors of Jamaica. Created by Chef Ernest Bent, who leads the kitchen alongside Marcus Samuelsson, the Golden Harvest Bowl is a heartfelt nod to his childhood in Jamaica—where rich spices, fresh herbs, and deep-rooted traditions shape every meal.

“This dish brings together the earthy richness of chickpea puree, the crispy sweetness of fried yams – a nod to the beloved ‘sweet potato’ often served in Jamaican households – and the deep umami of caramelized onions,” said Bent. “It’s a dish that’s both comforting and exciting, with layers of texture and flavor.”

  • Salt to taste
  • FRIED SHALLOTS:
  • 1 shallot, thinly sliced
  • ½ cup vegetable oil (for frying)
  • GARNISH:
  • Fresh parsley, cilantro

Instructions

    Make the Chickpea Purée

  1. In a food processor or blender, combine chickpeas, olive oil, garlic, cumin, paprika, lemon juice, and salt.
  2. Blend while slowly adding water until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning as needed.

Fry the Yams

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Toss yams with salt, pepper, and paprika.
  3. Fry in batches for about 5-7 minutes, flipping occasionally, until golden and crispy. Drain on a paper towel.

Caramelize the Onions

  1. Heat butter or olive oil in a pan over medium-low heat.
  2. Add onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden (about 20-25 minutes).
  3. Optional: Add brown sugar and balsamic vinegar for extra depth.

Make the Peanut Chimichurri

  4. Sprinkle with fried shallots and fresh herbs.
  5. Serve warm and enjoy!
Experience the Golden Harvest Bowl at Marcus Live!

Don’t feel like cooking? Then, take a drive to Marcus Live! during Black History Month and enjoy a dish that honors tradition, culture, and bold Jamaican flavors. The Golden Harvest Bowl is available for a limited time throughout February.

Note: Jamaican sweet potatoes, known for their red or purple skin and creamy, pale yellow flesh, have a slightly drier, starchier texture than the orange-fleshed sweet potatoes commonly found in the U.S. Their subtle sweetness and firm consistency make them perfect for frying, roasting, or mashing in traditional Caribbean dishes. If you can’t find Jamaican sweet potatoes, Japanese sweet potatoes or boniato (a Cuban white-fleshed sweet potato) are excellent substitutes, as they share a similar texture and mild sweetness. If needed, regular orange sweet potatoes can also work, though they will be softer and sweeter in comparison.
