Uncorking the Essence of Amanti Vino: An Interview with Sharon Sevrens

0

Nestled in the hearts of Montclair and Morristown, New Jersey, Amanti Vino is a true destination. For two decades, the business has been a cherished destination for wine aficionados and novices alike. With an extensive wine program that spans the globe, a commitment to sustainability, and a dedication to wine education, Amanti Vino maintains its standing as a premier wine shop in the area.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with owner Sharon Sevrens, at her Montclair location. We explored what sets this wine shop apart and leaned about upcoming events, wine education initiatives, and community involvement.

A Distinctive Wine Program

I began by asking Sharon for an overview of Amanti Vino’s wine program. What sets it apart from other wine shops in the area? She explained that Amanti Vino takes pride in curating a diverse and unique selection of biodynamic, organic, handcrafted wines from around the world. Sharon staffs her stores with dedicated wine professionals and provides WSET training for her employees, focused on providing exceptional customer service.

Sharon emphasized that their approach is rooted in quality, focusing on artisanal and boutique producers, with a strong emphasis on small, family-owned wineries. “We don’t focus on ratings,” she says. “Instead I spend much of every day tasting everything that is available on market, and I buy what I think is truly the best on the market for each region and variety at all price points.”

Exploring the World of Wine

Amanti Vino’s website showcases a vast array of wines from around the world. I asked Sharon to shed light on some of the unique or lesser-known wine regions and varietals featured in her shop. She enthusiastically shared that Amanti Vino offers selections from regions like the Jura in France, Alto Piemonte in Italy, a significant skin contact white section.

She added, “One of my favorite classes that we offer at Amanti Vino is called ‘funky varietals.’ We showcase obscure varietals from around the world.”

Aside from Sharon’s passion to bring these regions to life through her selections in store, she has also launched another aspect of the business; offering curated wine travel experiences for her customers. This past spring, Sharon took two different groups for a deep-dive in Burgundy and in the near future, she will be traveling with another group to Piedmont for an exploration of Barolo!

Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Wines

In an era where sustainability and eco-friendliness are paramount, we inquired about how Amanti Vino incorporates sustainable and eco-friendly wines into its collection. Sharon emphasized their commitment to environmentally conscious winemaking practices.

“We prioritize wines produced using organic, biodynamic, and sustainable methods,” she said. “Our customers appreciate not only the excellent taste but also the responsible production behind these wines. Over eighteen years, the world has gotten much more focused on organic as well and it fits perfectly.”

Wine Events and Tastings

Amanti Vino is known for its engaging wine events and tastings. Sharon shared insights into some of the upcoming experiences wine enthusiasts can anticipate. She mentioned themed tastings, wine dinners with local restaurants, and virtual events that have broadened their reach beyond the local community.

“Our events are an opportunity for people to deepen their appreciation for wine while having fun,” she explained. Aside from their events, Amanti Vino’s Montclair location boasts its vinoteca, where customers can purchase a bottle and their favorite snacks from the store and be transported to Europe via the sights and sounds of Church Street. On this particular Saturday afternoon, I had the pleasure to pull up a seat outside and enjoy a glass during Montclair’s JazzFest. What could be better?

Empowering Wine Enthusiasts

Wine education is a fundamental aspect of Amanti Vino’s mission. During our chat, Sharon delved into how they help customers — both novices and experienced — expand their knowledge of wine. Sharon herself was educated at the Sommelier Society of America and WSET. She talked about her history of educating others, as well as the regular tastings, wine classes, and educational materials available in-store and online.

Sharon began educating through the Montclair Adult School and in 2008, she expanded the Montclair store to add an upstairs classroom. In this space, she teaches a casual Saturday afternoon class, as well as all levels of the WSET.

After our interview, I had the pleasure of attending Sharon’s class, Unsung Heroes! The Must-Know Regions of the Old World. With roughly 16 students in attendance, Sharon expertly led us through an engaging educational tasting featuring grower champagne (a huge hit!). We also tried selections from lesser-known neighbors that are just off the beaten path from the most commonly identified regions.

Perfecting Pairings

Wine and food pairing can elevate any dining experience. I asked Sharon if Amanti Vino offers specific recommendations or resources to assist customers in pairing wines with different cuisines. “It’s my favorite conversation,” she says. “Pairing food and wine is really fun. It doesn’t have to be intimidating.”

She continued, “The first thing I always say when someone says this is what I am going to serve is, ‘What do you like to drink,’ and we go from there.” Sharon mentioned Amanti Vino’s price tags, which all include pairing suggestions and the staff’s expertise in helping customers find the ideal wine to complement their meals.

Community Involvement

Finally, we discussed Amanti Vino’s role both in the Montclair and Morristown communities. Sharon shared Amanti Vino’s commitment to supporting local residents and wine lovers through various initiatives. She mentioned charity events, collaborations with local businesses, and the business’s involvement in community fundraisers.

“Being part of these communities means being an active and engaged member of the community,” she concluded. Amanti Vino has partnered with Pineapple Express BBQ and Turtle + Wolf on Tuesday, October 17, at 7 p.m., to offer the first ever Birds, Bubbles ‘n’ Burgundy Event — A Benefit for Intensive Therapeutics! A leading provider of collaborative therapy programs (OT, PT, and speech), Intensive Therapeutics serves children and young adults with special needs.

Sevrens and her team possess a deep passion for wine, a commitment to sustainability, and a dedication to enriching the wine knowledge of their customers. With a unique selection, engaging events, and a strong community presence, Amanti Vino continues to be a beloved destination for wine enthusiasts in Montclair, Morristown, and beyond. So head over to Amanti Vino, where the love of wine comes to life.

Culinary Boom in Bloomfield: One Team, Three Offerings

0

Bloomfield is blooming with two new exciting dining establishments in town. The Brookdale, which has been around since 2020, is now joined by Fanny’s Restaurant & Bar and Ladyfingers Bakery & Bar.

With aspirations to build a vibrant and influential empire akin to the famed Tao Group, Fanny’s team includes Chef Jonathan Kavourakis, Joey Cinque, Anthony Cinque, and Chef Cheyenne Intindola. Meanwhile, the Ladyfingers team includes Chef Lauren Kavourakis and Samara Sulin. Together, they’re generating a culinary legacy in New Jersey.

Fanny’s Restaurant & Bar

Fiona Sheridan, Jersey Bites, Fanny's Restaurant & Bar, Bloomfield

Fanny’s offers the finest Italian cuisine, infused with a touch of Jersey flair. The vibe is sophisticated, modern, and cool. Whether you’re planning a work reunion, celebrating a birthday, enjoying a casual drink, or on a romantic date, Fanny’s is your go-to destination.

The bar is intimate, while the dining room has both indoor and patio seating. The booths are lit from behind with a gentle glowing light complemented by stylish brick walls and contemporary decor. Enjoy classic cocktails or a selection from the curated wine list, which focuses on Italian varietals.

Fiona Sheridan, Jersey Bites, Fanny's Restaurant & Bar, Bloomfield

The food? Delish! Take your pick between homemade pasta dishes such as ravioli, gemelli carbonara, and lobster lumache. Dinner favorites include chicken marsala, steak pizzaiola, and pork chop Milanese. I tried and loved the burrata: The cheese was fresh, with a layer that was subtle but deliciously sweet!

Fiona Sheridan, Jersey Bites, Fanny's Restaurant & Bar, Bloomfield

“I made a promise to my Grandma Fanny that I would name an Italian restaurant after her,” said Anthony Cinque, co-partner. “I’m deeply honored to fulfill that promise and create an establishment that reflects her way of life.”

Queens of Dessert

Over at Ladyfingers Bakery & Bar, every item is fresh and sweet. As the third spot in this culinary hat trick, Ladyfingers is the brainchild creation of pastry chefs and owners Samara Sulin and Lauren Kavourakis.

Their concept is nothing short of unique, offering a fun twist on the conventional bakery experience. While you’ll find classic desserts, like cupcakes and cookies, you can also indulge in cocktails. Yes, that’s right, cocktails at a bakery! This is really a match made in heaven.

The Dynamic Team

Fiona Sheridan, Jersey Bites, 5LC, Ladyfingers Bakery & Bar, Fanny's Restaurant & Bar, Bloomfield

The 5LC Group is the ownership team behind all three restaurants. Everyone on the team shares a natural synergy: a mix of spouses, old coworkers, and longtime friends who have united to build a restaurant empire. They’re an integral part of the booming dining scene in North Jersey.

Their collective expertise has allowed them to deliver delicious food, exciting dining experiences, and creative concepts. The team embarked on this journey by opening their first venture, The Brookdale, during the midst of the pandemic and have since expanded to take over an entire block in Bloomfield.

“We’re striving to transform the intersection of Broad and Watchung in Bloomfield into an exciting new destination,” said co-partnerJonathan Kavourakis.  “The Brookdale offers an upscale bar and grill, serving delicious meals, screening all your favorite sporting events, or providing a spot for a late-night drink. Fanny’s is an exquisite Italian eatery offering superb food for everyday dining. Ladyfingers represents the new generation of bakeries, where you can find custom cakes, delectable desserts, pastries, coffees, and even enjoy a splendid cocktail or glass of wine. It’s one-stop shopping on Broad Street.”

Look out for the 5LC Group, they project opening several restaurants across the state in the next few years, bringing innovation — and mouthwatering cuisine — to everyone.

Meet the Founders of Vodka Salad

0

Sometimes a great story starts with a salad. A couple of Summit, NJ, neighbors certainly think so.

Vodka Salad was born as an inside joke between Haley Telling and Allie Sabol. The neighbors loved to concoct their own cocktail recipes with fresh, clean ingredients and actually took their favorites out with them to present to unsuspecting bartenders who they then taught to mix them up.

A Brand Is Born

Laden with all of those fresh herbs, spices and fruit, they dubbed their creations “Vodka Salads.” COVID boredom and Haley’s “relentless optimism” transformed a hobby into a business.

Many of the current canned cocktails and alcoholic seltzers are just alco-pop and overly sweet. According to Allie, “They taste like melted popsicles.” Haley and Allie think there is space for something more sophisticated: something you might actually pair with real food and not cotton candy.

Down to Business

The neighbors have the valuable skills entrepreneurs need. Allie left her job at a New York City ad agency to market Vodka Salad. Haley has a background in sales and is a former holistic health coach.

The duo still had a lot to learn, not the least of which was navigating New Jersey’s puzzling liquor laws. They enlisted some help from Metabrand, in Edison, which handles reproducing flavors and manufacturing.

Flavor Development

Creating the flavors was all the work of Haley and Allie. They spent nine months developing recipes and working with Metabrand to get the details just right. Their meticulous approach favors quality over quantity so I wouldn’t expect a rapidly expanding product line.

They even zeroed in on a 5.5% ABV as the perfect alcohol level (a shot and a half) for Vodka Salad.

My favorite flavor is cucumber, lemon, and mint. It’s a gentle blend of flavors that would be great with light seafood a — think scallops or clams from the raw bar. Ginger, lime, and pomelo feels like a great base for a fall-themed cocktail. The trio is rounded out by strawberry, lemon, and basil, which is really characterized by the aromatics.

Leave it to a couple of Jersey girls to come up with a fun, smart, and tasty take on canned cocktails. Check out the website for some interesting serving suggestions or, better yet, experiment with your own.

Diner Closings Worry Jersey’s Foodie Faithful

Reports on the death of New Jersey’s beloved diner enterprise have been greatly exaggerated.

Well, at least we hope so.

News reports on diner closings and demolitions throughout the Garden State are disturbing. And while angst is real, this “churn” has been part of the diner business for many years. New Jersey has seen periods of downturns in the diner business before. During the 1960s and 1970s, many family-owned diners closed due to the influx of national fast-food chains.

When a favorite diner is shuttered, it removes the hub of a community, the gathering place for friends and travelers. New Jerseyans know that “a diner is more than just a place to eat and food is only half the meal.”

Part of the NJ Experience

A diner’s absence erodes the Garden State’s mythology: highballing truckers stopping to refuel their stomachs and souls at 3 a.m.; the wanderlust of hungry teenagers roaming the highways, inspired by the poetry of a Bruce Springsteen song; sunrise breakfasts Down the Shore; the unexpected, heartfelt conversation with a stranger at a diner counter — someone you’ll never see again, but will always remember.

The demolition of a vintage, modular, prefabricated factory-built diner from the 20th century also represents the loss of an iconic example of American industrial history and ingenuity.

An Optimistic Outlook

Author, consultant, and historian Richard Gutman, of Massachusetts, has tracked the diner business for five decades. He offered some perspective. “I would tell people in New Jersey to calm down,” he said during a phone interview. “Diners aren’t going to disappear. Yes, there is a downturn. Diner closings have been a blip in the wrong direction.”

Gutman remains optimistic about the big picture for diners as a viable business and American cultural institution. He acknowledged that many have suffered from Covid’s pinch. He also said that social media, with amplified reporting on diner closings, creates an overly grim outlook. “I have my opinions, he said. “I admit they’re controversial, but I’ve been doing this for 50 years.”

The Bottom Line

Larry Cultrera, is another Massachusetts diner sage, author, and photo archivist. He said that he, too, has seen his share of diner closings over the years in the Bay State. He pointed out that, in his neck of the woods, “building, transporting and setting up a diner has become cost prohibitive.”

The post-Covid world has been hard on diner owners. Costs have gone up for supplies, food, rent, equipment, and maintenance. Diner owners say it’s become difficult to hire, train, and retain staff, especially for late-night operations.

Pilgrim Diner Back in Business
Pilgrim Diner, in Cedar Grove

In some cases, diner owners simply decide to retire, with no one waiting in the wings. Many proprietors don’t own the valuable property on which the diner sits, and they may be forced to close by a new landlord.

The (Garden) State of Affairs

Anecdotal observations suggest that today’s Garden State diner sector is, at the very least, holding steady. Several landmark diners remain fixtures on the New Jersey circuit. They include:

  • Broad Street Diner, Keyport
  • Candlewyck Diner, East Rutherford
  • Johnny Prince’s Bayway Diner, Linden
  • Park West Diner, Little Falls
  • Pompton Queen Diner, Pompton Plains
  • Silver Coin, Hammonton
  • State Line Diner, Mahwah
  • Summit Diner, Summit
  • Tick Tock Diner, Clifton
  • Tops Diner, East Newark
  • Vincentown Diner, Southampton Township

The Pilgrim Diner, in Cedar Grove, reopened in September 2021, after having been closed for several years. The Runway Diner, in South Hackensack, opened its doors three years ago. East Hanover’s Seville Diner, which closed in 2021, is slated to reopen this year. And The Blairstown Diner was put up for sale earlier this year, so its fate is uncertain. Hopefully, a new owner will emerge to sustain diner operations, which began in 1949.

On the flip side, here’s a list of diners that we’ve lost in recent years. Many have been torn down or relocated, and some are in the process of closing:

  • Arena Diner, Hackensack
  • Cherry Hill Diner, Cherry Hill
  • Crossroads Diner, Belvedere
  • Egg Platter, Paterson
  • Elgin Diner, Camden
  • Empire Diner, Parsippany
  • Forum Diner, Paramus
  • Liberty Park Diner, Jersey City
  • Maple Valley Diner, Clifton
  • Marlton Diner, Marlton
  • Mastoris Diner, Bordentown
  • Metro Diner, East Brunswick
  • Mom’s Diner, Avenel/Woodbridge
  • Mustache Bill’s, Barnegat Light
  • Nicholas Diner, Paterson
  • Olga’s Diner (the original), Marlton
  • Peter Pank Diner, South Amboy
  • Prout’s Diner, Sussex
  • Red Lion Diner, Southampton Township
  • Royal Diner, Washington
  • Sage Diner, Mount Laurel
  • Shamong Diner, Shamong
  • Six Brothers, Little Falls
  • Tom’s Diner, Succasunna
  • USA Country Diner, Robbinsville

In addition, last year fires badly damaged two Phillipsburg diners — Key City and Catch 22. Reports indicate demolition recently began on the Key City Diner. It’s uncertain when or if the Catch 22 Diner will reopen.

Moghul Restaurant Rolls Back Prices to 1983 for 40th Anniversary

In the fall of 1983, iconic Indian restaurateur and Staten Island resident Mrs. Sneh Mehtani opened the Moghul Room at the Pennsylvania Hotel in NYC. This launched a revolution in fine dining for the area’s growing Indian diaspora.

The restaurant flourished and the family moved its flagship to Edison, NJ, where the Mehtani brand has become a hospitality powerhouse. In fact, the brand built a name for itself throughout the state and nationally, thanks to extensive global catering and an unwavering commitment to quality, service, and innovation.

The Mehtani Restaurant Group’s (MRG’s) 2021 partnership with the Arora Hospitality Group (AHG) expanded the legacy, as the portfolios of both companies trace their roots back 40 years, to the original Moghul.

A Year of Drinking Jersey: The Final Installment

Now that I’ve completed my year of drinking Jersey, I can look back fondly on all of the great beers, breweries, and brewers I’ve encountered along the way.

I’ve also seen how important the industry is to New Jerseyans. A bill (S-3038) to repeal the restrictions imposed by the Alcoholic Beverage Commission on breweries, which prompted my yearlong journey, received bipartisan support and sailed through the State Assembly and Senate unanimously.

Yes! The people have spoken! We love our state’s breweries!

Well, almost. The restrictions are temporarily lifted until the end of the year. However, the bill to end those restrictions permanently is sitting on the Governor’s desk, unsigned.

Here are my picks for the final installment of “A Year of Drinking Jersey.”

Parking Lot Pilz
Hackensack Brewing Co., Hackensack

Diversity isn’t something we normally associate with the craft brewing industry. Hackensack Brewing Co. is one of only a handful of minority-owned breweries in New Jersey. I wish there were more. I also wish I saw their beers more often in my neck of the woods. Parking Lot Pilz is just a beautiful beer and a treat for all of your senses. Who doesn’t love a light, crisp Pilsner style lager in the summer? I sure do and Hackensack nailed it.

Pitter Patter
Three 3’s Brewing Co., Hammonton

Third time’s a charm, right? Three 3’s Brewing Co. is one of three breweries in the little beer mecca of Hammonton — and they’re all good! Pitter Patter is a bit more round than the previous recommendation but is still sharp enough to be worthy of a pilsner style. In a town with two other breweries, it’s easy for a lager to get lost. Don’t snooze on this one.

Bradley Saison
Bradley Brew Project, Bradley Beach

Main Street brewery with indoor and outdoor seating, Bradley Brew Project has a breezy beach vibe. If you listen to WFAN NY, you might know of morning show producer Al Dukes. And you might appreciate this fun fact: Dukes is Bradley Beach local, and has a Bradley Brew Project beer named after him. His beer is an IPA, but we’re looking at their dry, floral, and citrusy Saison. I still like to listen to a ball game on the radio and this is perfect for kicking back in the shade and hearing John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman call the game.

Sign the Bill Phil
Icarus Brewing, Lakewood

This brewery has found great success with its juicy, hazy IPAs and monster stouts. So much so that they are going to build a brand new brewery and tap room in neighboring Brick Township, so keep an eye out for that.

In the meantime, Icarus Brewing has created another killer Northeast-style oated IPA as a fundraiser to support the Brewers Guild of New Jersey. The name refers to the aforementioned S-3038 bill. Icarus Brewing will provide the recipe to any New Jersey breweries that want to take part, as long as they agree to donate 25% of the proceeds to the guild. Nice job Icarus. I’d buy it for the can art alone.

Looking Ahead

New Jersey once was a major national brewing center. After a year of drinking nothing but Garden State beers (except when I was out of state, where they weren’t available), I am comfortable saying that we can claim that status again — at least as far as the beer goes. When it comes to legislation, we still have our work cut out for us.
