Ah, summer in New Jersey. Every year, National Hot Dog Day (July 15 this year) holds a special place in the hearts of New Jerseyans who love to celebrate the humble frank. Few places do hot dogs better than the Garden State, where you’ll find everything from classic boardwalk dogs to iconic regional specialties served in every corner of New Jersey. As the author of New Jersey Hot Dogs: A Frank History, I’ve spent years exploring the state’s legendary hot dog culture, and when it comes to the best Jersey Shore hot dogs, there are a handful of destinations that stand above the rest.

Hopefully you’ll be celebrating summer down the Shore, where the aromas of sunscreen and fried food mingle along the boardwalk on a salty ocean breeze. No matter which beach town you visit this year, you’re never far from an unforgettable Jersey Shore hot dog—and these are the spots every hot dog lover should experience.

Windmill Hot Dogs (multiple locations)

The giant red windmill atop the original WindMill restaurant in Long Branch has become one of the Jersey Shore’s most recognizable roadside landmarks and a must-visit stop for hot dog lovers.

Arguably the most iconic local hot dog franchise dotting the Jersey Shore, the jumbo franks served at Windmill are prepared by Sabrett and served with all the novelty and nostalgia you can handle. Perfectly charred and snappy, it’s impossible not to smile when you bite off both ends of the enormous frank hanging off the bun. There are several locations, but you can’t miss the giant red windmill on top of the flagship restaurant in Long Branch.

Max’s Bar & Grill, Long Branch

The century-old Max’s Bar & Grill retains its classic charm, but this ain’t your grandpa’s hot dog joint. Boasting an upgraded bar, dining area, and menu, Max’s is a seaside restaurant now prepared to weather another hundred summers. Of course, some things never change. Giant Wenning’s hot dogs are still marched across the same ancient grill. Don’t be surprised when Bruce Springsteen pops in for a few dozen dogs to go. It’s one of his favorite spots.

Maui’s Dog House, Wildwood

Maui’s Dog House stands out on the Wildwood streetscape with its vibrant, tropical-inspired façade, welcoming visitors to one of the Jersey Shore’s most beloved seasonal hot dog spots.

Quirky is one word to describe a hot dog stand where the food is served in colorful, plastic dog bowls. Delicious is another. It’s officially summer when Maui’s seasonal stand starts slinging its grilled Hoffman brand hot dogs. Condiments come with their own lingo here. Want a plain dog? That’s naked. Spicy mustard? That’s horsey, short for the horseradish they use to doctor it up. Sauerkraut? It’s stewed in local, brewed beer, so order it drunk.

Mayfair Boardwalk Grill, Asbury Park

A longtime fixture on the Asbury Park Boardwalk, Mayfair Boardwalk Grill has been serving classic Jersey Shore favorites—including its famous giant hot dogs—for more than six decades.

Asbury Park has seen its share of ups and downs, but at least one thing has remained a constant, if understated, presence for over sixty years. Mayfair serves everything from classic boardwalk eats like giant hot dogs and gooey, oozing cheesesteaks to surprising treats for the modern palate like vegan tenders and smothered tater tots. With something for everyone to try and everything prepared just right, no one ever leaves disappointed. Grab a bench and enjoy!

Lou Dogs, Sea Isle City

One of Lou Dogs’ signature creations features a perfectly prepared hot dog topped with crisp housemade pickles, showcasing the creative flavors that have made this Sea Isle City favorite a must-visit.

Lou Dogs is building a solid reputation for its rotating daily menu of haute dog toppings on a boiled beef-and-pork Hatfield frank, all nestled into a homemade, freshly baked bun. Looking to try the house-made pickles and German mustard? That’s just a random Tuesday. Sweet tomato jam, bacon, and diced white onions? Come back tomorrow. It’s an indoor brick-and-mortar, but they still serve from the same umbrella cart the family has used since 1982.

BlueClaws Baseball is back at ShoreTown ballpark, and the hot dogs are bringing the heat! Classic Sabrett’s are still sold throughout the park, but the new addition of Smokie’s Sausage and Dogs behind Section 115 is a game-changer. They dish specialty footlongs with mouth-watering toppings, from all the classics to (you guessed it) a hot dog topped with pork roll and cheese sauce! The weekly chef’s specials should keep fans returning all summer long.
