James Beard Award Winning Chef Michael Solomonov comes to the Axelrod Performing Arts Center

August 1, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

James Beard Award Winning Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic comes to the Axelrod Performing Arts Center in Deal.

Within the pages of renowned chef Michael Solomonov’s new cookbook (co-written with business partner Steven Cook), Zahav: A World of Israeli Cooking, is a culinary journey that encompasses thousands of years along with influences from a breadth of heritages, cultures, and diasporas. The gorgeous tome of around 150 recipes was released in October and is chock full of Solomonov’s interpretations of authentic Israeli dishes. On Monday, August 1, 2016, at 6:30pm, local food enthusiasts have a chance to meet the author at Axelrod Performing Arts Center (100 Grant Avenue, Deal Park, NJ), taste his cooking, and take home an autographed copy.

Since opening his acclaimed Philadelphia restaurant Zahav in 2008, Solomonov has received high praise for his take on modern Israeli cuisine, including the James Beard Best Chef Mid-Atlantic award. His style plays with Israel’s culinary melting pot with recipes inspired by flavors from the Middle East, West Africa, the Mediterranean, and Eastern Europe. In addition to well-known Israeli dishes like kugel, rugelach, and yes, hummus, Solomonov offers Iraqi dumplings called kubbe and duck and foie gras kabobs in the cookbook.

“The cool part about Israeli cuisine is that it’s a mix of centuries-old flavors from across the Mediterranean — Persian, Turkish, Middle Eastern, Eastern European — all of which are rooted in family tradition,” said Solomonov, who was born in Israel and raised in Pittsburgh. “The cuisine from Israel is constantly moving forward, and the cuisine at Zahav plays to that idea. It’s my take on those ancient recipes that will forever be deeply rooted, with an emphasis on cooking with ingredients of the season.”

Chef Michael Solomonov is the owner of Zahav, Philadelphia, as well as Federal Donuts in NYC, Abe Fisher and Percy Street Barbeque in Philadelphia and the most recent, Dizengoff in Chelsea Market, NYC.
This Special Chef Event is part the 6th annual Axelrod Israel Film Festival held July 26-August 7 with 8 films offered at 3 locations: Axelrod Performing Arts Center in Deal, Jewish Heritage Museum in Freehold and Monroe Senior Center in Monroe Township.
