Hunterdon Land Trust Farmers’ Market Food Day

October 8, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Free

If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, what happens when you attend an apple tasting?

Find out when an apple and pear tasting, along with other family-friendly events, will be held as part of a celebration of local food at the Hunterdon Land Trust Farmers’ Market on Sunday, Oct. 8. The market is located at 111 Mine St. in Raritan Township and is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Visitors can sample a variety of apples provided by local farmers. The market will have a sweet—and tart—sampling with suggestions about what apples are perfect for pies or for tossing in your child’s lunchbox.

Also, seven Girl Scouts from Troop 80688 working on their journey badge will share information about how to use fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, squash and apples, without wasting them.

The market will welcome children’s author Felicia Sanzari Chernesky, who has written several children’s books including From Apple Trees to Cider, Please, Sun Above and Blooms Below: A Springtime of Opposites, and Sugar White Snow and Evergreens: A Winter Wonderland of Color. Chernesky will lead a scavenger hunt encouraging children to search the Farmers’ Market for different shapes.

And, you can learn about canning and preserving your Farmers’ Market purchases with Chris Whitney of Locktown Farm.

All events are free; no registration is required.

The Farmers’ Market features about 20 local farmers and vendors offering organic produce, grass-fed beef, pork, chicken, yak, honey, artisan breads, cheese, milk, eggs, locally roasted coffee, native plants and more. Visitors can enjoy a flatbread pizza made with ingredients provided by local farmers while listening to live music with Karl Dentino’s Ragtime Relics.

The market will welcome a new vendor: Cotton Cattle Company, a holistically managed farming operation offering grass-fed and pasture-raised meats.

Farmers’ Market sponsors are Basil Bandwagon Natural Market, Matt’s Red Rooster Grill, ShopRite of Hunterdon County and Peragrin LLC.
