Winter has been particularly mad at New Jersey this year. Comfort food is the order of the day during the deep freeze — but is there a beer equivalent? A comfort beer? There sure is, and several NJ breweries are brewing it.

The Winter Warmer beer style is characterized by a big malt presence and dark complexion. Hops take a back seat, but alcohol warmth doesn’t. Then there are those cozy winter spices. Additions such as cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg all conspire to give this brew a wassail vibe that warms you up and puts a glow back in your frozen cheeks. I thought this old beer style was deader than Marley’s ghost, but I was mistaken. Here are a few from around the state!

NJ breweries showcase winter warmer beers

Kings Road Brewing, Haddonfield

Stratosphere Brewing, Mount Holly

Snow Day Protocol, 6.4% ABV
Even with a modest alcohol kick, the combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove should keep you cozy indeed. In fact, stay awhile and have that second pint. No need to rush back out into the cold.

Little Dog Brewing, Neptune

This one shows up each year to heat up your Valentine’s Day. Cinnamon and 3 varieties of chili peppers spice up a basic porter into something special. It’s not over the top but just enough heat to melt your heart.

Lions Roar, Westfield

Fallin’ for Her, 6.4% ABV
The romance theme continues with a slightly different approach. This brown ale employs cinnamon, nutmeg, and a touch of vanilla to win your affection. Table for two near the fireplace, please!

High Point Brewing Company, Butler

Winter Wheat Doppelbock, 9.5%
Okay, it’s not technically a spiced ale, but it sure does have all of the winter spice notes on the nose. Smooth and warming, that big alcohol kick will certainly thaw you out like a big fuzzy blanket. It was also a gold medal winner at the 2025 International Beer Competition!
